Moving to Qatar, whether as an individual or with family, requires thorough preparation and planning. It means understanding how everyday life works, especially when dealing with official documents and digital platforms that facilitate important tasks. Knowing what to prepare in advance and what to expect can make the transition smoother. This guide covers both the bureaucratic and lifestyle aspects of the move, including information on children's places and activities, as well as the cost of living.
Getting your Qatar ID
Your Qatar ID (QID) is required for nearly everything — signing a lease, getting a local SIM, opening a bank account, or accessing healthcare and government services.
Once you receive your Residence Permit (RP), your employer or sponsor typically processes the QID. However, it is important to know how to check the Qatar ID status and track renewal requirements.
You'll need your QID to:
-
Rent a house or apartment
-
Get a local SIM card
-
Open a bank account
-
Access public healthcare facilities
-
Apply for licenses or official services
How to check your ID status via Metrash:
Step 1: Download the Metrash app. Enter your QID number and registered mobile number to sign in
Step 2: Click on the Profile section on the main menu

Your ID card will appear in your Metrash profile. When you check its status, you might see one of the following messages:

Valid and active: Your ID has been updated and is ready to use.
Under renewal: Your ID is in progress. No further action is needed from your side.
Expired: Your ID is no longer valid — you must renew it as soon as possible to avoid fines.
How to check your Qatar ID status via the MOI website
Step 1: Visit the MOI website and select Inquiries

Step 2: Select Other Inquiries from the menu and click Official documents

Step 3: Type in your passport number and check whether your QID is ready

Handling all inquiries via Metrash
Metrash Qatar is perhaps the most important and useful app you'll need. It allows you to manage everything online — from renewing your QID to handling traffic-related issues and applying for visas. More specifically, through Metrash, you can renew your QID or driving license, check traffic violations, register vehicles, transfer car ownership, or pay fines.

Planning to drive? Here's what you'll need
If you're planning to drive in the country, you'll need to obtain a Qatar driving license first. Some residents can convert their existing permit, while others may need to take a few driving lessons and tests. You will also need to register your vehicle and pass all necessary inspections.
What comes next: Renting or buying a car
Once you have your license, the next step is to decide whether you'll rent or buy a car. If your stay in Qatar is short or you're unsure of how long you'll stay, then renting might be the best option. If you're staying long-term, though, buying a vehicle, new or used, could be more cost-effective.
Popular choices for expats in Doha include SUVs, such as the Toyota Land Cruiser, Nissan Patrol, and Hyundai Tucson, known for their comfort and efficiency. Electric vehicles are on the rise, too.
Moving to Doha with kids? Start here
Relocating as a parent comes with its own responsibilities and questions — from finding the right nursery for your kid to sourcing daily essentials. The good news? Qatar is a family-oriented country that places a lot of emphasis on kids.
What to prepare first
Nurseries and schools: Doha offers a variety of international nurseries and top-tier schools. Spaces can fill up quickly, so it's recommended to apply early.
Healthcare: Government health services require your child to have a health card, while private care is also widely available.
Car seats and safety rules: It's essential to understand safety rules and get a suitable baby car seat for your child.
Where to shop for products: Look for stores like Mothercare, Mamas & Papas, or Babyshop — available at most Qatar malls — and get familiar with Doha's most useful apps for product delivery.
Things to do with kids in Doha
Qatar offers a variety of activities for kids, from indoor venues to parks and beach clubs. If you're planning to celebrate your kid's birthday in Doha, the options are endless.
