From communicating with another driver to filing a report, here's how to deal with car accidents in Qatar.Ā

In Qatar, traffic laws and insurance procedures are clearly defined to ensure that accidents are handled efficiently and fairly. However, many drivers aren’t fully aware of their legal obligations or how to handle the entire insurance and reporting process.

We hope you never need this guide. But if you do, don’t panic! Knowing the proper steps can help you stay in control, reduce stress, and make the process smoother.

Differences between minor and major car accidents

Car accidents involving two drivers present at the scene can be classified as either minor or major. A minor accident has no injuries and minimal vehicle damage, while a major accident may involve injuries and significant damage requiring police intervention.

Examples of minor damage:

  • Scratches or dents on the bumper or side panels

  • Broken side mirrors or minor damage to headlights

  • Paint transfer from another vehicle

  • Small cracks in the windshield that do not affect visibility

Examples of major damage:

  • Deployed airbags

  • Structural damage (crumpled hood, damaged chassis, misaligned wheels)

How to report an accident

Step 1: Ensure you are safeĀ

You may be in shock at first, but take a deep breath. Accidents happen, and the best thing you can do is handle the situation calmly and turn on hazard lights to warn other drivers. You should also check for injuries and callĀ 999 immediately to report a major accident, as requested by Qatar Traffic Law No. (19).

Step 2: Remove traffic obstacles

In case of a minor accident, move the vehicle to the side of the road to avoid blocking traffic. If you’re in a major accident, do not move the cars unless necessary for safety or instructed by the police.

Step 3: Communicate with the other driver

Stay calm and always be polite. Although emotions can be high, avoid raising your voice and getting into an argument. Don’t admit fault. Saying "I'm sorry" can be interpreted as accepting liability.

If the other driver is aggressive, refuses to cooperate, or threatens you, stay inside your car and lock the doors. Don’t argue, just call 999 immediately and request police assistance.

Step 4: Report the accident

If both drivers agree and the accident is minor, you can use the Metrash app to report the accident. To use the app:

Ā 1. Log in to the app (available on iOS and Android).

2. Select Traffic and then Accidents.

3. Add information, location, and upload photos of the accident.

4. Submit the report to receive an SMS with an accident file number.

If you cannot submit the report via the app or if there’s a dispute, call 999 to explain the situation. The police will usually dispatch an officer to the scene, but in some cases, they may ask you to visit the nearest traffic investigation office if feasible. Either way, make sure to follow their instructions and have these documents ready:

For major accidents, always wait for the police to arrive. They will assess the accident and determine the responsibilities.Ā

Step 5: Get the police report

If you reported the accident via Metrash, you can download the police report from the app once it is processed. For accidents reported directly to the police, visit the Traffic Department after 24 to 48 hours to collect a printed copy. You can always check the status of your report on the MOI Qatar Accident Report Inquiry page.

Step 6: File the insurance claim

Follow the steps described by your insurer to file a claim. If you’re a QIC client, you can find the proper procedure at the car claim portal. The insurer will then guide you to an approved repair workshop.

How to handle a hit-and-run accident

A hit-and-run accident occurs when another driver causes an accident and flees the scene. Not a particularly pleasant experience, but keep calm — there’s a protocol to defend your budget.Ā

If possible, note the fleeing car’s license plate number, model, and color. You should try to get the vehicle owner details. However, Doha is well-equipped with street cameras, and the Traffic Department will check them after your accident claim.Ā  Then, report the accident in Metrash or file a report at the Traffic Department.

Get the accident report and file your claim with your insurer. You can follow the steps described in the QIC claims portal to file a car claim.Ā

Should you report accidents with no other drivers involved

Even if the other driver's not involved, you should always report the accident. Fleeing the scene of an accident is illegal and is punishable by up to three years in prison and fines of up to QAR 50,000.

If you hit a parked car, wait for the owner or leave a note with your contact and insurance details. In case you cannot locate the owner, report the accident via Metrash or the nearest police station.Ā

You should also report any single-vehicle accidents. If publicĀ property (traffic signs, barriers … ) is damaged, notify the police by going to the nearest police station.

Bear in mind that insurance policies do not cover single-vehicle accidents unless explicitly stated. Contact your insurer to confirm your coverage and next steps.Ā
