Regardless of how unpredictable the times are, life has to go on. We continue working, attending classes, and making the most of our free time. And for the sudden accidents, there is personal accident insurance, which provides financial protection to both you and your family. Here’s everything you need to know about Personal Accident Insurance — what it covers, what it doesn’t cover, and who it is for.
What is Personal Accident Insurance?
Personal Accident Insurance provides financial protection in unexpected accidents that lead to serious injuries, permanent disability, physiotherapy, hospitalization, and even death. As per policy definitions, an accident is a sudden event occurring at an identifiable time and place, while an injury is an identifiable physical damage caused directly and solely by the event.
To get into specifics, the policy covers:
-
Injuries: Broken bones, limb losses, dislocations, or burns
-
Physiotherapy: When mobility and well-being need some help to recover
-
Permanent disability: When caused by the accident
-
Hospitalization: For further treatment and care
-
Accidental death: Due to accidental and severe injuries

Who can benefit from personal insurance?
Qatar law obliges employers to either provide insurance coverage that compensates in case of permanent or total injury or death caused by the employment, or self-insure to the equivalent levels. So, employers with domestic staff usually opt for Personal Accident Insurance as it protects both parties in case of work accidents.
But, this type of coverage isn’t limited to employer-employee relationships. Anybody can sign up for the policy and ensure they have a financial safety net in unexpected accidents. It covers events like car accidents, bike falls, and even slipping on stairs. You can purchase insurance for just yourself or extend it to your family, household members, or both.
What accident insurance doesn’t cover
Here’s a list of some situations that a standard personal accident policy won’t cover:
-
Accidents that are a direct consequence of a state crisis
-
Injuries sustained while flying, unless the insured person is a fare-paying passenger on a commercial flight
-
Injuries sustained in unlawful acts
-
In case of a deliberate exposure to danger
-
Self-inflicted injuries
-
If an accident occurs while the insured person was in charge of a vehicle with blood/urine alcohol levels above the legal limit
-
In case drugs were taken against prescribed instructions
-
Injuries resulting from sickness or disease
-
Sports injuries for professionals and semi-professionals
