If you already hold a GCC driving license, youâre in luck: you likely wonât have to go through the months-long course. But with the information not readily available to expats, it can be difficult to determine the exact process and documents you need. So, hereâs all you need to know about converting a GCC license in Qatar: from driving and eye tests to fees and locations.Â
What is a GCC driving license
A GCC driving license is basically a license from any of the six Gulf Cooperation Council countries: Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Kuwait, Bahrain, and Oman.
Licenses are recognized across the region, which makes traveling and working between GCC states much easier. That being said, once you become a resident in Qatar, youâll need to convert your license to a Qatar one to continue driving legally.
Also, keep in mind that short-term visitors can drive in Qatar with their GCC license for up to three months. Beyond that, a transfer to a Qatar license is mandatory.
Who is eligible for a GCC license transfer in Qatar
Simply having a GCC license from another country doesnât immediately make you eligible for a Qatari one. You are eligible if you are a holder of a valid license from a GCC state, since expired licenses cannot be converted. You also need to be a Qatar resident with an ID as well as a holder of a license for a private, light vehicle (special categories like heavy trucks or buses may require additional steps).
Documents required
To apply for a license conversion, you'll first need your Qatar ID. You should also have your original license from the GCC state with you. If possible, scan it so you can upload it if you decide to book your appointment online. You may also need your passport.
In case you need to complete lessons and tests, proof of a passed eye test and lessons, as well as a paid license conversion fee, will be requested.
GCC license transfer in Qatar: Step-by-step process
Step 1: Verify your status
GCC statesâ citizens are eligible for a direct test in Qatar. This means you likely wonât have to go through driving lessons, but will need to pass driving examinations, both theoretical and practical ones.Â
On the other hand, if youâre just a GCC resident and not a citizen, depending on your nationality, you may have to take some lessons. The best course of action here is to visit a nearby driving school to get informed and schedule a test/lessons.Â
Most driving schools in Qatar have a Traffic Department, allowing you to book exams in person. Alternatively, you can go to the Traffic section of Metrash, go to License Service, and book your driving appointment there. Youâll be able to choose the date and the driving school.Â

Step 2: Get an eye test
To attend examinations, youâll have to pass an eye test at an MOI-approved optical or medical center. You need to bring a passport-sized photo and your QID.Â
Some of the approved centers are Al Dar Optics, Al Ameen Optics, Al Falah Optics, and Naseem Medical Center, but there are dozens of others. Therefore, you should search for nearby clinics and check whether the ones youâd want to visit conduct MOI-approved exams. Â
Tests are quick and inexpensive, usually around QAR 50. You can also get an eye exam in most driving schools, but that usually costs an extra QAR 100. Once your results are approved, youâll receive a stamped slip that youâll bring to the driving test.
Step 3: Book exams and lessons
For this, youâll need the following documents:

You may need additional documents depending on your status. For instance, if your stay is sponsored, you will also need a NOC (Non-Objection Certificate) from your sponsor. In case a company is sponsoring you, theyâd likely have to provide their trade license as well.
Moreover, fees also depend on the tests you have to take and whether you have to complete any lessons. In general, a direct test costs around QAR 750, and issuing a driving license is QAR 250.  Â
Step 4: Receive the licenseÂ
Once you pass the driving test, youâll receive your license at the school where you took it, via its Traffic Department. You can do it the same day, as the results are typically available within ten to fifteen minutes after the test is taken.Â
Your license will be valid for five years. After this, youâll have to renew it.Â
