With Qatar Airways flying directly to Tokyo, Osaka, and Fukuoka, Japan has never been more accessible from Doha. But first, you'll need to sort out your visa situation. Luckily, Qatar nationals can enter the country on an expedited process using an e-passport. Others might have to go through the visa procedure, depending on their nationality. Here’s a step-by-step guide to applying for an e-passport and for a Japan visa from Qatar.
Who can apply for a Japan visa from Qatar
Qatari nationals are part of Japan's visa waiver system. They can stay in the country for up to 30 days just by registering their e-passports. The document is valid for three years or until the original passport expires. For stays longer than 30 days, they must obtain a visa.
Qatari residents who don’t hold citizenship might need to apply for a visa, depending on their nationality. For example, the U.S. and most EU countries are part of the visa-exemption program, meaning they can stay in Japan for up to 90 days without a visa. Indian citizens can obtain an e-visa, while Filipinos have to apply for a physical visa at the embassy.
How to register an e-passport
There are two ways to apply for an e-passport: in person at the Embassy or online through the JAVES Application. Both methods are free.
Application at the Embassy
You need to book an appointment on the Embassy website first.

Then, visit the Embassy of Japan with these documents:
-
Passport
-
Colored copy of the passport
-
Filled out the application form for the passport registration
Processing is one working day, after which you can collect your passport.
Online application
The easiest way to apply for an e-passport is online, via the JAVES system. Simply register an account and fill out your information. You’ll receive an email confirming your registration within two working days.

Except for transit visas, all visa fees are the same regardless of visa type. Indian nationals pay QAR 20, while everyone else pays QAR 73. The multiple-entry fee is QAR 20 for Indian nationals and QAR 146 for others.
Most visa types are available for single or multiple entries. Multiple-entry visa applicants must provide a letter explaining in detail why they need more than one entry into Japan.
The processing time is five to seven business days. But the Embassy advises applying at least three months in advance, just in case.
Tourist visa
You need a Japan tourist visa from Qatar if you plan to go sightseeing or visit friends or family. It lasts for 90 days. You can apply for a multiple-entry or single-entry type.
Apart from the regular documents and the application form mentioned above, you’ll need additional proof of relationship in case you’re staying with relatives or friends.
If you’re staying with relatives within the third degree of kinship:
-
Documents that prove your relationship, such as the birth, family register (Koseki-Tohon), or marriage certificate
In case you’re staying with friends:
-
Documents that prove your relationship, such as photographs, letters, emails, international call logs, money or goods transmittal
-
Letter of invitation
-
Letter of guarantee
Business visa
To attend meetings and conferences in Japan or conduct market research, you need to apply for a business visa. It’s valid as long as you’re not involved in any paid activities. The business visa expires within 90 days, and you can apply for a single-entry or a multiple-entry visa.
Apart from the above-mentioned documents, you’ll need:
-
Registration or description of the company/public organization
-
Letter of invitation
-
Letter of guarantee
Study visa
If you want to attend a course at a Japanese university or school, you need a Japanese study visa. Before you apply, you need to enroll in a Japanese school, and once you’re accepted, the school has to submit enrollment documents for you.
Aside from the usual docs, you’ll also need:
-
Admission certificate
-
Certificate of eligibility issued by the school showing you meet the conditions for staying in Japan
Work visa
A Japanese work visa is for those who plan to work in Japan for at least 90 days. It’s typically approved for three months or between one and five years, depending on the job.
Apart from standard documents, you also need to provide:
-
No objection letter from your employer in Qatar, not older than one month
-
Certificate of eligibility from the Japanese employer
-
Employment contract with a Japanese company
Transit visa
Passengers who stay in Japan for up to 72 hours and aren’t planning on leaving the airport don’t need any kind of Japan visa. However, for stays longer than 72 hours or for departure from the airport, a transit visa is required. This type is slightly different from others because it’s cheaper and only lasts two weeks. The fee is QAR 17.
For applications, you need to show your full travel itinerary. And, in case your final destination requires a visa for your nationality, you’ll have to provide that as well.
