Travel Insurance Claim 3

Step-by-step instructions on how to file a successful travel insurance claim in case of medical treatment abroad, lost passport, or trip delays.

We all buy travel insurance, hoping we’ll never need it. But when a lost passport fills the trip with anxiety, a medical emergency wipes out your allowance, and a flight delay forces you to spend more vacation days, it’s good to know you can at least make up for the unplanned costs. This article guides you through the claim process and helps you ensure you get your money back.

How to get a travel insurance claim approved

If something unexpected happens, read your policy first. Some situations, such as medical treatment, require approval from the insurance company before any action is taken. Familiarize yourself with your obligations as the insured person under the specific travel insurance you obtained from Qatar. For instance, with QIC, the insured person has the following responsibilities:

  • Not doing anything that would cause an unnecessary increase in costs

  • Notifying the insurer of the situation immediately

  • Allowing the insurer to carry out a reasonable investigation into the events

In the event of an unexpected situation, save each receipt and ask the responsible institution (hospital, Embassy, or flight carrier) to provide as much proof of the circumstances as possible.

How to file a claim for a lost passport

While it’s never pleasant to lose the most important travel document, it’s comforting to know that QIC travel insurance provides coverage in these events. The coverage extends to expenses incurred due to the loss of a passport, including accommodation and travel costs.

Documents you need for filing the lost passport claim:

  • Qatar ID

  • Travel booking

  • Proof of lost passport from the Embassy

  • Receipts of all expenses that occurred as a result

  • Policy number

Here are step-by-step instructions on what you should do if you lose your travel document:

  1. Go to the nearest Embassy and submit a report for a lost passport

  2. Obtain a written report from the Embassy that confirms the situation

  3. Keep the receipt of all the costs that occurred as a result, including additional accommodation and travel expenses

How to file a QIC travel insurance claim for trip delays

If your trip was delayed by more than 2 hours, you may be able to apply for reimbursement of costs incurred. There are some conditions, though. You won’t be able to file a claim in case:

  • An alternative transportation has been offered within two hours after the scheduled departure time

  • The expenses are recoverable from the flight carrier

To be reimbursed for lodging and meal expenses caused by delays, you should request a written confirmation from the carrier detailing the number of hours of delay and the reasons. You’ll submit this document with your claim.

Documents you need for filing the trip delay claim:

  • Qatar ID

  • Travel booking

  • Proof of the trip delay and the reasoning provided by the flight carrier

  • Receipts for all expenses that occurred as a result

  • Policy number

If you fulfill reimbursement conditions, you should:

  1. Ask the carrier to provide you with a written confirmation of the number of hours of delay and the reasons

  2. Save all the meal and lodging receipts that occurred as a result of the delay

  3. Download and fill out the QIC travel insurance claim form

  4. Send the form and proof along with the policy number to personal.claims@qic.com.qa as soon as possible

  5. Wait for QIC to get back to you

Keep in mind that any insured person who files this claim has to pay the excess of USD 50. The excess is the agreed amount the insured person pays towards a claim and is deducted from the total refund amount.
