White vehicles with blue and yellow markings, red cars, black armored units: decoding police car colors in Qatar.

Qatar police vehicles are color-coded to show their purpose, urgency, and role in ensuring the country’s safety. Understanding what each of them means helps you find the relevant authority in an emergency and know what’s going on in case they stop you on the street. Let’s go over all of the different cars you can see in Qatar, and what kind of uniforms each police unit wears.

Blue, white, and yellow police car

You’ll frequently come across a white police car in Qatar with yellow and blue striping. This is a regular traffic police vehicle, operating under the General Directorate of Traffic within the Ministry of Interior. On their exterior, you’ll see the words traffic and police in both Arabic and English with the General Directorate of Traffic’s logo next to them. The cars are equipped with blue and red flashing lights when in active duty.

These units are mostly responsible for traffic control and road safety, and their main activities include:

  • Speed control

  • Traffic accident response

  • Roadside inspections

  • Congestion supervision

  • Traffic management during public events

When you’re stopped by this patrol, it’s either a routine inspection or you violated a traffic regulation, and you’ll be fined. The drivers are expected to signal, park on the right safely, stay in the vehicle unless directed to the contrary, and provide a driving licence, their ID, and vehicle registration (Istimara) when requested.

Black and white police vehicles

Rescue police, also known as the Al Fazaa, typically use black-and-white police cars. The Al Faaza name derives from an old Arabic phrase that signifies chivalry and helping those in need. Therefore, this unit’s main job is to assist civilians in their daily lives and ensure their safety. Their tasks include:

  • Reacting to disturbances in the community

  • Patrolling for crime prevention

  • Assisting stalled motorists

  • Providing first aid during mass events

  • Offering assistance to the elderly and children

  • Being the first on-scene patrol during emergencies

  • Supporting other governmental agencies

The Al Fazaa units are common in places where residents interact most often: at intersections with heavy traffic, at events, and in areas with high pedestrian footfall.

Local community forums frequently mention Al Fazaa as the department best suited to address public welfare breakdowns or emergencies, underscoring that the organization is a front-line assistance unit rather than an enforcement-based agency. So, in case of any assistance in a crowded area or when you feel unsafe, you can approach an Al Fazaa officer.

Dark tactical vehicles

Dark armored vehicles are not normal police cars in Qatar. They are elite military units known as the Amiri Guard, aimed at protecting the royal family and national strategic assets and buildings. The cars are configured to be deployed quickly, provide protection, and respond tactically, rather than in a routine engagement with people.

When you see them on the road, you need to slow down and immediately allow the driver to pass. Avoid stopping near those cars, and never approach or photograph them, as they have strict security measures.

A red police car with flashing lights at the top and yellow markings is the official vehicle of Lekhwiya — the Internal Security Force. They maintain public order and are responsible for enforcing security matters. Some of their tasks include:

  • Preventing crimes

  • Responding to state emergencies

  • Combatting terrorism

  • Crisis response

  • Cooperating with other law enforcement agencies

  • Providing security detail to visiting officials

  • Securing borders and coastal lines

These units ensure public safety and stability in Qatar and are frequently seen along the borders and at large-scale events.

Qatar police uniforms

In September 2020, the Ministry of the Interior implemented a unified police uniform system across all departments. The update aimed to enhance the visibility, consistency, and social awareness of officers across roles. Both traffic and Al Fazaa police in Qatar wear dark blue or beige uniforms.

In the summer, traffic patrol can also be seen wearing short-sleeved light blue shirts with clear police markings.

The heavier gear commonly used by security and tactical units has insignia and department patches on it that are very noticeable. Lekhwiya officials also have darker uniforms with red markings.

Every official officer has an identification badge of the ministry, which is marked with the emblems of rank and markings of their department in Arabic and English. When in doubt, you are allowed to ask to view the officer’s badge.
